Frogs Around Us: Learn, Observe & Protect
As part of Wildlife Week 2026, this in-person outreach program will introduce school students to the fascinating amphibian diversity of Mizoram and the importance of frogs in healthy ecosystems.
The program will primarily target students from Classes 8–12 and will combine an interactive learning session with practical biodiversity observation.
What students will learn
Frogs and amphibians
Diversity of frogs and other amphibians in Mizoram
Basic frog biology and ecology
Ecological roles of amphibians
Habitat requirements of frogs
Common threats to amphibians
Why streams, forests, wetlands and other habitats are important
Basic frog identification
Students will learn how to recognize frogs using visible characteristics, colour patterns, body features, habitat associations and, where appropriate, frog calls. The session will use local examples so that students can relate amphibian diversity to their own surroundings.
Field observation
Participants will take part in a guided biodiversity observation activity at a suitable nearby site. They will learn how to observe frogs and other wildlife responsibly without disturbing animals or their habitats.
Biodiversity documentation
Students will learn how to record basic observations such as species, location, habitat, date, photographs and other field information. Where appropriate, we will introduce citizen-science approaches and platforms such as iNaturalist.
Quiz and interactive activities
The program will include a frog and wildlife quiz, identification activities and an open discussion addressing common misconceptions about frogs and amphibians.
The practical identification and field components will be led by Nilutpal Das, Vice President of the Eco Club, Mizoram University, and a Ph.D. researcher working on amphibian ecology and conservation, with support from members of the Eco Club and the Department of Zoology, Mizoram University.
The aim is to move beyond a conventional awareness lecture and give students an opportunity to learn about frogs, observe them in nature, identify them, document biodiversity and understand why amphibian conservation matters.
The event is being organized in connection with Wildlife Week 2026 and as part of the broader SAVE THE FROGS! amphibian-awareness community.
